Built by producers and contestants
The Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association was established in 1992 by a handful of producers and contestants who wanted a association run for the people competing in it. The inaugural CPRA Finals were held in Lufkin, Texas with $25,000 in added money.
By 1993 the association had grown to 938 competing members across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mexico. In 1995 CPRA earned the designation of the largest rodeo association in Texas, and membership peaked at 1,186 in 1997.
Where we are today
In 2011 the CPRA Finals added money reached $90,000, with total season payouts of $1,766,349.66. By 2019 the association sanctioned more than 158 rodeos with payouts exceeding $4.1 million.
The 2020 season was cut to 10 sanctioned rodeos by the COVID-19 pandemic and membership fell from a peak of 998 to 727. The association has rebuilt every season since.
